Sports betting seemed to be a taboo topic for those who are affiliated with or related to any sports of any kind up until now. In some cases, betting aficionados are sometimes judged negatively because of the image being portrayed by the general public and even for countries that legalize sports gambling.
There were even conspiracy theories that are circulating before that Michael Jordan was a big gambler and lost millions in all sorts of money wagering. In order for him to pay his staggering losses, he was offered to shave points during the NBA Finals. It was believed that he refused to partake in “point shaving” during the game 6 NBA finals between the Chicago Bulls and the Phoenix Suns in which the Bulls has won by a margin (99-98) in Phoenix. In retaliation of the “creditors,” his father was brutally murdered one month after the Bulls won the NBA Finals.
In 2007, initial reports surfaced regarding the allegations to NBA referee, Tim Donaghy, of game fixing. The reports claimed that Donaghy had bet on games during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 NBA season in which he officiated. Upon surrender, he told the judge that he was not involved on any game fixing and had only given tips about the players’ physical condition and the player/referee relations for his own profit. He was then sentenced to 15 months in prison and three years of supervised release.
These kinds of news stories put sports bettors, sports betting brokerages, and sports bookies alike in the bad light. They overshadow the purpose of sports betting: a leisure time for sports enthusiasts who want to test their skills in predicting sports results and having the thrill of placing a wager on its outcome.
Changing paradigm. There are people who are open-minded enough to tackle sports betting which is one of the most surprisingly taboo topics around the world. For the time being, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made a statement on the New York Times published Thursday night. Here is the brief glance on what he has to say:
” Let me be clear: Any new approach must ensure the integrity of the game. One of my most important responsibilities as commissioner of the N.B.A. is to protect the integrity of professional basketball and preserve public confidence in the league and our sport. I oppose any course of action that would compromise these objectives.
But I believe that sports betting should be brought out of the underground and into the sunlight where it can be appropriately monitored and regulated.”
In addition, Silver sees that sports gambling is inevitable in the US and affirm that other countries like England has legalized sports betting that eventually became very popular and widely accepted since its legalization during the 90’s.
Fantasy Sports also made a big factor on the steadily changing perception of the general public in terms of sports wagering. Like any other sports enthusiasts might say – fantasy sports and sports betting is parallel with each other particularly in studying an account of myriad of statistics, facts, and game theories in order to be competitive.
Others fear of losing the integrity of the game (basketball or any other sports) if sports gambling is completely legalized around the world. This should not be the case. Betting would allow fans to build more connections with sports in general and legalizing it will benefit in many ways like Adam Silver has stated.
